The church says Calvary Baptist Church began in 1900 as a mission of the First Baptist Church. By its own account, the building was sold in 1912 to the Wesleyan Methodist Church and the congregation moved into a school building on North Grove Street. The church says the first service in the building on Haywood Road was held on 17 November 1968.
